This score id very interesting. It actually show the very beginning of the German baroque, how it was born under the influence of the Gabrieli(s in Venice (and of Schutz's friend Monteverdi) and how the genius of Schutz cerated a new style in the framework of the Lutheran context. Usually, especially due to the 30 years war, Schutz weutes in "black and white', with vooices ans a siple continuo. ere, he has the opportunity to use a grat number of various instruments, even more vaird thanin mist Monteverdi(s score, which gives to us an unique vision if Schutz s a 'colorist'. Some commentators here underline that iy is difficult to hear these instrumlents in this record, and unfortunately they atr tight. We would have loved more enhancement of the spectific instrumental part.

why we have a sheet music in different tonality at recording ?

We performed this in Sydney once with two recorders. My husband, who was conducting, had to think of a way to stand down the 2 violinists who were making a hash of it and came up with the idea of using recorders saying that this was how it was performed originally !

Where's the recorders, the dulcian, the trombones, the cornetti, the clarino trumpets? Dull and colourless.

I had to sing this for all state choir and let me tell you, I love the song, but as a tenor it was hard!

The best recording so far on the net. Recorders instead of out of tune violins, what a great idea. As for the bassoon, these danish players have got their sense of humour.

I'll find that bassoonist! ;) Anyway: finally a performance 1000 times better then any other so far! Please, people it sounds so well: mach's doch noch mal bitte bitte!

3:03 made me laugh! Things like that are just nice reminders of our humanity and imperfection!

It's also an incredibly clever piece harmonically. He keep modulating downwards all the time, flattening chords, turning expected major chords into unexpected minor ones, creating descending chromatic scales, all to express droopiness and mourning.

I'm singing the bass part in this today. I'm a little nervous. I'm more nervous about the Bach piece.

I would echo everything thing JamesEis said in his remarkably sensitive, perceptive post below. This is exquisitely beautiful work in every regard. A joy to find something gentle, subtle, full of fine detail. There's a purity about it that's most appealing in this strident, bombastic, tragically vulgar peasantine age.

Back in High School in the 12th Grade, this is one of the songs that we've practice in chior class.

lovely. I was a choirboy since 8, and have sung ever since. I've had the pleasure of singing all four parts of this piece as my voice changed. It still remains among my most cherished pieces of all time.
